REligious Broadcasting (practical)

Given the research specialism in religion and the cathedral (being our logo, etc). We should launch a course (MA?) in religious broadcasting. The output of this would be activity from the Cathedral plus other faiths. We could webcast that and it would bring a lof of traffic to the site, and therefore links and therefore recruits.

I looked and some of the video about the cathedral gets 10,000s of hits. A Songs of Praise from the Cathedral got 100,000 hits in a year;l (but it was dsone as a very clasy BBC outside broacast).

I thyink the religious material is a goldmine and could at last make us visible on the interemt. I mentioned it to Alasdair Spark and he seemed interested.

Any ideas.

  1. There's lots of potential for programmes to develop this by making very short pod casts that are generic and likely to attract hits. You Tube has lots of stuff but it is produced mainly by US universities - how to do ethnography, etc. We could do 'Managing Your dissertation','Undertaking Interviews etc.'. the key is to keep them very short and sanppy rather than long and worthy.

  2. I suspect that I am the only member of the team to have had a Christmas morning Songs of Praise broadcast from their own circus (actually that's a pretty safe suspicion) so I'm naming myself as Religious Broadcasting Expert. I really doubt there is a market for an MA in Religious Broadcasting (if we were to align ourselves with another subject I would have thought Archeology had more scope). I worry that the idea of getting involved in the Cathedral for the sake of of SEO could be perceived as being rather cynical if it became public.

The idea of doing OBs from the cathedral is interesting and could provide worthwhile material if we get an OB truck. The situation isn't simple, however. Church services are copyright and the C of E guards its rights very carefully. It may allow recording but it is likely to want to host the videos which would give us no advantage. I really don't think there is a way we cold work this out by Easter.

We also need to think of the educational value - if we are going to work on OBs there needs to be a variety.

We could start with graduation and make money selling the DVDs.

  3. you have got wrong end of stick. There is easily a market for MA religious broadcasting when you take USA into account Also we can have very small specialist MAs within a journalism MA framework.

Selling souvenir DVD is exactly what we don't want to do. Degree ceremony would not get any traffic other than existing people, and we want new people (eg from outside the UK). Nobody is going to link to a degree ceremony at Harvard let alone some little place that nobody's heard of.

On the other hand if we can webcast the Bishop Winchester we can get links to that from 100s - maybe 1000s - of churches around the world. Then there's the music aspect. So it is just sitting there. I would go down there on a Sunday morning and flipping well do it myself if I didn't live 100 miles away (round trip). You mention the rights issues, but instead of that why don't you go and do a rights deal with them - as the students have with Basingstoke Bison, and they are now getting 500 googlehits a week, with our logo on it and with links back to our site.

If you are an expert on this then suggest you do the research into the web traffic for religious stuff - it is vast even for the islamic stuff eg where technical peoduction is very poor. You know how to price keywords and traffic on google as well as me, so it is a straight forward business calculation at the end of the day. But my idea wa sincethe Bishop is on the governors (I have seen him) he might do it for free and that is just about the most useful thing anyone could at the moment to get us some sort of web visibility (unless you can suggest something else).

We should just go and film it, stick it on youtube and see what happens.

I don't need a lecture on why I can't do something. I need helpo on actually carrying it out. This is a simple viable thing that neds doing - not just passing snide remarks about it - I will do it myself when I get round to it later.

But the Cathedral is a USP for us. It is actually on the logo of the organisation. Yet there is absolutely nothing about it+us on the web of any sort whatsoever.
